About the Artwork

The influence of French Impressionism on the work of Childe Hassam is clearly evident, for here again the treatment is loose and free and the artist’s intent is to capture the shimmering quality of light as it falls across the massive foreground trees and illuminates the face of the architectural structure behind. It is interesting to note that 1926, the date when this etching was executed, was the 150th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence and that Hassam depicts an architectural monument, Washington’s Headquarters at Valley Forge, which of course had strong patriotic association.
