About the Artwork

Bearden developed his style from the inspiration of cubist collage. This technique allowed the artist to create dynamic abstract patterns and at the same time to explore surrealistic disjunctions of time and space. Bearden addressed his art to social issues, but never in a literal or doctrinaire fashion. He preferred the modernist attitudes of ambiguity, irony, and subjectivity.

Bearden was born in Charlotte, North Carolina, in 1914. He studied art at New York University, the Art Students League, Columbia University in NYC, and at the Sorbonne in Paris
