About the Artwork
Artist statement, 1995:
“My interest in the natural world, as a printmaker, never waned in the nearly fifty years since Study of Insects #1, 1947. Insects are still at the focal point of my passion. What has changed and evolved is the perspective from which this natural world is viewed. In 1947 I was content to observe and record from the human “outside” point of view. It is now more challenging to try to become part of the natural world and record from there: To become a bee, a flower, or a toad, and imagine the surroundings from the “inside”. The power of engraving has given me an eloquent means to explore my obsession.”
