About the Artwork
Buhot studied painting under Isador Piès, and then Jules Noël. He then turned his attention to the art of engraving, working under Gaucherel. After a brief interruption of his studies in 1870, printmaking became his major interest. He continued to paint, however, and some of his best works are delicate watercolor illustrations for novels by authors Barbey d’Aurevilly and Alphonse Daudet. Something of the unique character of his prints derives from the fact that Buhot was a watercolorist. He was able to transfer the effect of brush washes into his prints employing aquatint, engraving, roulette, and drypoint as tools. His incorporation of remarque or marginal sketches around the border of the principal scene amplified the Impressionistic effect of a world in motion.
