About the Artwork

A native of Kansas’ Flint Hills, Foltz’s prints explore life in the Midwest and West, from the quiet of rural towns and farm fields to the bustle of cities and factories. Over the Pass showcases Foltz’s fascination with machinery and pictures a train hurtling through the mountains, emphasizing the train’s raw power. The viewer is positioned as if riding on top of the train—almost as if on a roller coaster—with a clear view down the track. The artist’s exceptional printmaking abilities are on full display, with the train’s fiery exhaust contrasting with the soft snow. The print likely depicts the Colorado and Southern Railway that traversed the Rocky Mountains of Colorado, an engineering marvel built in the late 19th century.
