About the Artwork
This print, from 1925, is one of Bishop’s first etchings. Though the style is much more abstract than her later work, Bishop’s characteristic attention to gesture is already present. With her gracefully turned head and her fingers gently combing through her hair, the female figure in Nude appears dreamily content. Bishop’s rendering—in confident, long lines—adds to the sense of serenity.
