About the Artwork

In the last decade of his career Hartley painted with equal facility in all his past styles. Though Maine Coastal Still Life reflects his debt to Cubism, it is important to realize that the painting has been developed far beyond a surface resemblance to Cubism and is as original a work as its European counterparts. According to Elizabeth S. Navas, the picture was a special favorite of the artist.1
