About the Artwork

This work is a hand-colored lithograph drawn by Louis Maurer, one of the most important artists on the Currier & Ives staff, and illustrates in precise and fully literal terms an event often witnessed in the American city of the 1850’s, and in addition points up the 19th century American’s everyday awareness of the threat of fire and the high esteem in which the fireman was held.
