About the Artwork

Charles was one of two children born to Oscar and Emilia Berninghaus. At the time of Charles’ birth his father was earning his living as a lithographer in St. Louis. The family stayed in St. Louis in the winters and went to Taos in the summers. Sadly, his mother Emilia died at an early age in 1913.

Oscar Berninghaus assumed full responsibility for raising his young children, developing a close and affectionate relationship with them. He bought a home in Taos in 1919 but continued his dual residence and dual career until 1924. At that time, he moved the family permanently to a large and elegant adobe home in Taos.

Charles followed in his father’s footsteps. He made painting his career and divided his time between painting in Taos and exhibiting his work in St. Louis.
