About the Artwork

David Bernard founded and developed the printmaking program at Wichita State University after arriving there in 1946. Upon retirement from the university in 1983, he was awarded the title of Professor Emeritus of Art and Printmaking.

Bernard not only mastered the spectrum of printmaking techniques, he was instrumental in developing the new technique of collagraph in the 1950s. His subject matter is as diverse as his printmaking techniques. He has explored religious themes, satire and caricature. A good portion of Bernard’s work is devoted to landscape and genre, particularly Kansas scenes and scenes inspired by his travels in the United States, Europe and Mexico.
