About the Artwork

Painter and printmaker Joseph Floch created many images that include mothers and sons over the course of his career. For those artworks, it is likely that Floch drew inspiration from his own close relationship with his mother. In this work—probably a preparatory drawing—the artist sketches his mother using a minimum amount of graceful, long lines. With these few drawn arcs, her relaxed posture and playful expression are nevertheless perfectly rendered. The tenderness and ease between the artist and his subject, a relationship that would inspire much of Floch’s art, is evident in Joseph’s Mother.
