About the Artwork

Bruce Moore was a teenage art prodigy from Wichita who won national recognition as a sculptor of elegantly stylized animals in the late 1920s, created designs for Steuben Glass in the 1950s when that company began its production of fine art pieces, and executed several important federal commissions while living in Washington, D.C., in the 1960s. Moore not only distinguished Wichita by his professional success, he also enriched his hometown through his teaching and his sculpture.

Moore’s family came to Wichita when he was 12 years old. He showed his artistic talent early and was quickly embraced as a peer by the leaders of Wichita’s art community. With their encouragement he entered the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts at age 17. There he studied with major American Sculptor Charles Grafly. Upon graduation he returned to Wichita to teach at Fairmount College (now Wichita State University) and the Wichita Art Association.
