About the Artwork

Commissioned along with nine other artists, Scholder was asked by the United States Bill of Rights Committee to create a work reflecting, one of the freedoms embodied in the Bill of Rights, to be used in national exhibitions and programs celebrating the 200th anniversary of the Bill of Rights. He selected the Fifth Amendment. After submitting an initial painting, Scholder decided to expand and resolve the issue by painting a second painting. However, the Committee chose Man with Shield #1.
