About the Artwork

At age 12, Grant was sent by his family from San Francisco to Scotland for school. The voyage—which lasted 4 1/2 months and took Grant around the southern tip of South America—inspired Grant’s lifelong fascination with the sea. While working as a newspaper and magazine illustrator, Grant also continuously produced fine art paintings and prints of maritime and naval subjects. Heave and Haul pictures two lobsterman pulling their boat out to sea, the lobster cage peeking out over the boat’s side.
