About the Artwork
“I like to make pictures with some depth of subject matter. This may be more literary than purely a painter’s instinct, however, subject matter of some importance interests me very much.”
So wrote the artist to Mrs. Navas in July 1942. Sparhawk-Jones’s literary/intellectual approach to painting was recognized and praised by one of her most highly respected colleagues, the painter Marsden Hartley. Of her, Hartley wrote:
“It seems to be with something of a mental rapier that she conceives her subject matter for [her] pictures border on the exceptionally forceful and they are different in thought, as well as execution, from the work of most of the soft painters among men and women. She is a thinking painter with a rare sense of the drama of poetic and romantic incident.”
