About the Artwork

Mattern was born in Durkheim, Germany. He studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and at the Art Students League with George Bellows. Mattern taught for many years at the University of Kansas where he became head of the fine arts department and later taught at Drake University, Des Moines, Iowa. His work was exhibited widely in the Midwest.
