About the Artwork

In the Seventh Air Capitol Annual held at the Wichita Art Museum in 1960, the museum presented a purchase award to watercolorist Charles H. Sanderson and acquired this painting titled Figures of Intrigue for the permanent collection.

The image typifies Sanderson’s work of the period in which he explored themes of city life, making symbolic reference to both the physical and psychological intensity of the urban experience by means of nervous linear patterns and densely layered color.

Sanderson played a major role in the founding and growth of the Kansas Watercolor Society. An active professional painter from the 1950s through 1993, Sanderson’s work was exhibited in major competitions and in numerous solo exhibitions around the nation.
