About the Artwork

Robert Ecker was born in Waynesboro, Pennsylvania, in 1936. He studied art at Pennsylvania State University in University Park, Pennsylvania, where he earned a Master of Fine Arts degree. Ecker initially devoted himself to painting and supplemented this interest with some work in etching. Attracted to the idea of an intimate image and the velvety black ground of the mezzotint print, Ecker began working in mezzotint in 1977. He taught himself the techniques and spent seven years working exclusively in that medium. The artist has produced over 140 mezzotints. Although he continues to explore the possibilities of mezzotint, Ecker has recently resumed painting.
