About the Artwork

Bernard was born in Sandwich, Illinois. He received his BFA from the University of Illinois and his MFA from the University of Iowa where he studied printmaking with Mauricio Lasansky and sculpture with Humbert Albrizio.

Offered a position at Wichita State University in 1949 he created the first college department of printmaking in the state of Kansas. Before he retired as Professor of Art in 1983, he supervised fully equipped lithography and etching studios as well as a highly competitive graduate program.

Bernard mastered a great range of printing techniques, rather than specializing in one medium. Always eager to experiment, he investigated paper and cardboard prints in the 1950s and was one of the original practitioners of the collagraph technique. Classical Harbour is an example of this technique, which shows the full range of values and textures a collagraph offers.
