About the Artwork

Kuniyoshi was born in Okayama, Japan, and came to the United States in 1906. He studied art in Los Angeles and New York City and traveled to Europe, Mexico, and the American Southwest.

During the 1920s and 30s Kuniyoshi painted the type of subject matter which is most closely associated with the artist’s studio and profession—still life and figure studies. Although he continued to paint recognizable objects, Kuniyoshi did adopt some aspects of Cubism and other modernist styles.

Following World War II Kuniyoshi’s imagery became more Surrealistic in character; he painted allegories which referred to the suffering and destruction caused by the war, human irrationality, and the absurdity of the human condition.
