About the Artwork
In the 17th century the engravers of the Low Countries, influenced by the example of the craftsmen who executed the designs of such great artists as Rubens and Van Dyck, established a tradition of portraiture, which was to influence artistic production of that subject in painting and sculpture through the 19th century.
The basic conventions of this tradition were the presentation of a three-quarter bust view of an individual inside an oval frame with a crisp and meticulous linear rendering of lights and shadows to achieve the impression of modeling and depth. Pieter van Schuppen, a Flemish engraver transplanted to Paris, was one of those engravers who established this tradition.
