About the Artwork

Boat Landing, Dinard, painted in 1910, is an outstanding example of the artist’s later, freer work. Hedley Howell Rhys has pointed out that in the watercolors of 1910 “the drawing has become almost playful, value contrasts are sharper, color is more brilliant, more frequently broken, and in some passages is applied in rectangular strokes that form a mosaic. These passages strongly suggest the technique evolved by Signac from Seurat’s theories.”1 The crowd, the sense of timelessness, shows Prendergast’s debt to that master of pageantry, Carpaccio.
