Ann Harriet Haden, known as Annie, was the eldest daughter of Whistler’s half-sister, Deborah and the famous etcher, Sir Francis Seymour Haden. Whistler spent Christmas in London with Annie’s parents. At the time of this etching, she would have been about 10 years old. Whistler completed three other etched portraits of the young girl.
