WAM invites families to a Family ArtVenture with Stephen Towns, artist of “Safer Waters: Picturing Black Recreation at Midcentury.” Inspired by his quilts and paintings of a midcentury Florida lakeside resort for Black families, the program blends art, history, and hands-on discovery. Highlights include storytime with the artist, sensory activities, simple sewing, and music and dance from the era.
Enjoy an informal evening of creativity and conversation hosted by artist Christine Vumai. Settle into a relaxed atmosphere in the galleries with two drop-in experiences: a guided tour of Safer Waters: Black Recreation at Midcentury and a hand-quilting activity inspired by the exhibition.
