Benny Andrews: Art and Activism

Join Connie Choi, associate curator of the Studio Museum in Harlem, for an illustrated talk on artist Benny Andrews. This talk explores Andrews’ remarkable career as an artist, activist, and educator. Choi will discuss the importance of social justice, history, and collage in the artist’s practice. Works by Andrews are in the spring exhibition African American Art in the 20th Century as well as WAM’s collection presentation I, Too, Sing America. Choi contributed to the 2020 Michael Rosenfeld Gallery exhibition and related publication Benny Andrews: Portraits, A Real Person Before the Eyes and will discuss the artist’s portrait of his mother in the WAM collection.
