Wichita: “Don’t touch that!” is something children often hear in art museums. But the Wichita Art Museum will offer children the option to dig in, touch art, and make art with Family Artventure, Saturday February 23rd, and a new exhibition in the Living Room gallery called InterACTIVE.
Family Artventure will be from 11 am to 3 pm. Family Artventure encourages kids to play and create with a variety of art mediums. Families will have the opportunity to explore different ways the earth and landscape inspire artists. Kids will also have the option of making an earth-inspired artwork of their own. “Children will be working with clay and leaves and other earthy items,” says Andrea Keppers, Director of Education. “We’d like families to experience the inspiration of working with natural materials, representing earthy themes.”
The Family Artventure also coincides with a new, kid-friendly exhibition at the Wichita Art Museum called InterACTIVE. InterACTIVE is a project that combines art and physical activity. The gallery provides space for children and families to view art, engage in creative expression and learn about the processes of art making.
“We really want to get kids interested and comfortable with art early, so they can carry a love of art with them their whole lives,” says Keppers. InterACTIVE features the works of three Wichita artists, Chris Gulick, Tom McGuire and Lee Shiney. All three artists specialize in moving, or kinetic art. Kinetic art requires physical movement on the part of the viewer in order to fully appreciate the pieces’ qualities. Keppers says that’s why it’s the perfect exhibition for children. “Kids love to touch and explore. This exhibition not only encourages that, it requires that people get physically involved. It’s definitely something special for families.”
