Optional dinner at The Muse (user pay). Indicate if you will be staying for dinner when you RSVP.
Fee: $20 per person for each “Murdock on Murdock.” Make check payable to Murdock Society of FWAM.
The art of Norman Rockwell is featured in the WAM exhibition, “American Chronicles,” opening March 7th. After a tour of the galleries, Murdock members will be encouraged to speculate on why Mrs. Navas chose NOT to acquire a painting by Norman Rockwell. Was it due to a difference in world view? Values? Or, mere historical accident? Do you think we should own a Rockwell? Andrea Kepper and Stephen Gleissner will get you talking.
*This Murdock on Murdock will be followed by a “Rockwell” All-American Dinner in the Muse. Details to follow in a mailing.
RSVP by Friday, March 12
Stuart Davis’ Bass Rocks #1 is a standout among the Murdock Collection. Its rhythmic abstractions and startling colors make it a superb example of American modernism in the jazz age. WAM is also home to another example of Stuart Davis’ work, a more naturalistic scene of a New England storm called Windy Day. WAM’s Director of Education, Andrea Keppers, asks “why, where, what, and how” did Davis’ style change and asks Murdock Society members to compare the two works and discuss their relevance to the Museum’s collection in 1944 and 1980, and now.
